National Arena League12 October 2013 at Keynsham

A combined team of Lydney and Cinderford‘s swimmers went to Keynsham for their first of this season National Arena League galas swimming against 5 other teams. With a depleted squad and no 11/under boys relay team they struggled against a very high standard with Trowbridge winning 31 out of the 50 races.

Cinderford sent a small team to Tewksbury for the latest 4 Seasons gala achieving good results. With 11 invited swimmers unable to attend, the others had to swim up age groups and three 9 year old swimmers from the teaching group.

Whilst the rest of the County basked in record highs in the weather, a team from Cinderford Swimming Club sweltered in the heat of GL1 to take part in the Gloucester Open Meet. With a brilliant weekend of results with 130 personal best times, 87 medal positions.

Cinderford competed in July‘s Four Seasons gala which took place in Ross hosted by Hereford swimming club. A miscommunication meant Gloucester City arrived at Hereford pool and had to make a quick dash to the Ross venue, meaning a slightly later start to the gala on a very hot Saturday.

Cinderford Swim 21 awards evening & swimming gala 27th April 2013

60 swimmers took part in a gala at Heywood on Saturday to celebrate the re-accreditation of Cinderford Swimming Clubs Swim 21: the ASA‘s Club Development programme. The programme aims to give swimmers the best possible environment in which to develop and provide quality opportunities for swimmers. The Club has proudly held Swim 21 Awards in Teaching and Skill Development since 2005 and the Club has held the new category for Masters Swim 21 Award since 2008.

Cotswold League results 20 April 2013

The Cheltenham pool at Tommys Lane gave Cinderford swimmers some quick times in Round 4 of the Cotswold League galas. The 13/u relay team of Luke Mills, Sam Jenkins, Andrew Cole and Jamie Leighton had great swims winning both the freestyle and medley relays, Jamie also winning the individual 50m freestyle with a new PB and improving his time in the 50m butterfly.

City of Bristol Open Meet Level 1 on 13 & 14 April 2013

Long Course at Hengrove 50m Pool, Bristol 4 Cinderford swimmers made the trip down to Hengrove pool in Bristol for their second long course meet. The standard of competition was very high, including Olympians Stacey Tadd and Siobhan-Marie O’Connor, and British senior international Elena Sheridan. There were also large contingents from Gloucester City and Soundwell aiming to qualify for nationals later in the year.

Gloucester Masters Open Meet 14th April 2013

5 Cinderford swimmers competed in the Gloucester Masters Open Meet on Sunday at GL1. Rob Cleal courageously (or was that foolishly?) swam in the 400m freestyle, he finished in an excellent 2nd place in his age group and also achieved a new PB in his 100m IM. Mike Bretnall has not been able to train for a while but still put in strong performances to finish with bronze, silver and gold medals and he also won a bottle of Famous Grouse in the raffle so went away very happy!

4 Seasons Gala at Monmouth on 6 April 2013

In a friendly atmosphere the latest 4 Seasons Gala for novice swimmers was held at Monmouth, with Cinderford hosting and competing against 3 other teams. Tewkesbury won the gala with 133 points, Cinderford were very close behind with 131 points, Gloucester had 115 points and Hereford 99 points.

County Relays 24th March 2013

Cinderford Swimming Club entered 4 teams in the County Relays with mixed results. The morning session saw the 13/14 girls in the 200m freestyle and medley relays. Chloe and Rebecca Howard, Jess Bayliss and Maddie Worgan competed in this largest age group; they swam strongly but finished outside the finals. In the Men’s 400m relay race Billy Harris, Dean Embling, Jake Parker and Josh Peck finished 9th, just missing a place in the medley final with Billy improving his 100m backstroke time. In the 400m freestyle relay Jake Parker took an impressive 3 sec off his time, although the team missed achieving a finals place.

County Blocks 23rd March 2013

The County Blocks on the final Saturday at GL1 saw 8 of our swimmers competing. Nia Westlake swam in the 200m freestyle, 100m backstroke and 100m butterfly winning silver and 2 bronze medals. Her sister Ceris improved her 200m freestyle by 5 sec and took 4th place in this and the 100m butterfly. Dean Embling won silver in his 200m freestyle and Sam Jenkins finished in 4th place in the 100m backstroke with a 3 sec PB and took 3 sec off his 200m freestyle time.

Cotswold League results 16 March 2013

With only 21 Cinderford swimmers competing in the latest Cotswold League at Wellington Sports Centre and many swimming up age groups, it was an accolade to them to receive such good compliments from officials and competing teams at the gala, all swimmers put in an excellent effort and were a credit to the Club. “What a great attitude your swimmers have with such a small team”, “Brilliant team support”, “Amazing effort when just going for PBs” were just some of the comments received. The coaches, spectators and other team members would like to reiterate those thoughts and thank everyone who turned up to compete for your Club.

I swam 6 events in the Welsh Open Masters at Swansea International Pool over last weekend, 9/10 March. Did 50m breast 50m Fly 50/100/200/800m freestyle. Got 6 golds in my new age group of 75-79 (I‘m 75 this Fri 15th!!)

County Championships 2 - 3 March 2013

The penultimate weekend of the County Championship saw Dean Embling in his element with the 100 and 200m breaststroke. His first race was the 100m in which he won the 18/over age group achieving his place in the Championship final, Dean secured gold in this finishing a fantastic 5 sec ahead of the rest of the field. He swam into the silver medal place with a new PB in the 200m IM and improved his 100m freestyle time. In the 200m breaststroke Dean won his age group race and in the Championship final led throughout to comfortably finish 8 sec ahead of the second placed swimmer taking another 3 sec off his earlier best time, He was awarded the Devon County ASA Cup for being the Senior 200m breaststroke champion.

Cotswold League gala at Lydney on 23 Feb 2013

This year‘s Cotswold League eventually got underway after the gala in January had to be cancelled due to the snow. Cinderford hosted the first competition at Whitecross against Cirencester, Bishopsworth and Brockworth. With an excited younger team Cinderford swimmers swam at their best and showed their ability to the full with plenty of 2nd places and PB’s and much hope for the future. Cirencester won the gala with 156 points and Cinderford finished in 4th place with 101 points.

The latest weekend of the County Championships saw 4 of Cinderford‘s swimmers attain Championship final places, achieved by swimming one of the 8 fastest times overall in that event from any age group.

Nia Westlake has got the Gloucester County Championships off to a fine start for Cinderford in the long distance races. She battled the snowy weather on two Sunday afternoons to make the journey to Gloucester to compete in the 800m and 1500m freestyle.

Masters at Shrewsbury Meet in January 2013

Cinderford Masters had an excellent start to the New Year by winning the Top Club Trophy at the Shrewsbury Masters New Year Gala. The 14 strong team, which was the largest Cinderford team to date, finished 60 points ahead of Birmingham Masters and beat Gloucester Masters and Stroud Masters in the process.
