History

Cinderford & District Swimming Club is a thriving competitive swimming club. Since its formation in 1977, great strides have been made to bring the club to the position it occupies today and we are constantly looking for ways to improve even further. Our aim is to ensure that swimmers enjoy, learn and develop good stroke technique and improve speed. Their self-confidence and esteem will be enhanced and they will meet many friends of differing ages.

Comprising of over 100 swimmers, the Club competes at levels from local to district standard; training sessions are held four nights a week at Heywood Leisure Centre, Causeway Road, Cinderford, Gloucestershire. Across the groups there are graded ability sessions for swimmers and all swimmers are given the opportunity to progress through the club to achieve their maximum potential.

The Club is run by a voluntary group of dedicated parents and others interested in the improvement of swimming in all aspects of the club, from the management committee to the teachers/coaches.

Learning to Swim
Unusually for a competitive swimming club, we also teach swimming from ASA Stage 6 / Level 8 or equivalent. We believe it is a successful combination, providing the young learners with the example and inspiration to become competent swimmers rather than giving up at 50 or 100 metres. We follow the new ASA National Swim Award Plan; this means that the swimmers have the opportunity to be awarded with certificates at certain stages within their development and is a continuation of the swimming teaching plan in place at local swimming pools. But success is not only measured by such tangibles as awards, its also by individual improvement, self esteem and individual and team goals achieved.

The Club is a member of the Gloucestershire County A.S.A. This allows us to participate in the County Championships and Club swimmers can also represent their County.  All swimming clubs must belong to the Amateur Swimming Association (A.S.A.) through one of its Districts. There are five of them and Cinderford & District Swimming Club is affiliated to the ASA South West.

Swimming for life
Swimming is one of our most popular and successful sports in which Britain has had regular success in the Olympic games. As well as being great fun, it is one of very few sports that can be enjoyed throughout life as a means of maintaining physical fitness, and is widely recommended for rehabilitation after illness or injury.
